Further color lovin’

10 May

I use ColourLovers all the time. You can color patterns, create patterns, use pattern. Color palettes, print palettes, order fabrics. Seriously. This is true social media connecting people to what they really want. Or at least, I want it.

The Sliding Scale of “Fine” and “Commercial” Artists

10 May

I Love Dyske. I have previously posted this. This article, discussing the difference between fine and commercial art really described an ongoing dilemma for most designers of today: what are you doing this for? zFor a lot of people, it is for the financial benefits. And not every field of work questions why it’s making money, so that’s great. SOme people think that is not so great that money is a motivator and do it just because they have to. In his writings, Dyske describes how everyone is a little bit of both fine and commercial artists and how the difference is having something to say rather than needing to be heard. It’s a lovely piece.

Ted: ideas worth spreading.

8 Feb

I was hesitant about TedWomen (it seems like it would create a divide rather than bridge one), but this is excellent.

Bridging gaps between the social and the individual is the heart and soul of SignDeclimb!

This blog is fantastic.

Well designed, well written and I love this perspective on life things.

Cloudy with a chance of clarity?

4 Feb

So is this blog exploring the ideas behind my design? Is it my reflections on this product as a whole? I don’t even know. I thought I understood the syllabus but clearly I’m missing something…

In other interesting news, Eric and I must have learned from the same tutorial, because what he showed us in class was literally what I worked on this afternoon, I was just much less intelligent about it.

I would post what I got done today but unfinished, it actually looks kind of dirty. More to come.

Future = Art + Science?

4 Feb

I am absolutely in love with this website, and since I don’t know whether I’m supposed to present my blog or another… Here’s what I’m thinking about most often when I read blogs likes Core 77. Design should be a balance of analytical thought and creative process, otherwise its totally ineffective. SpaceCollective combines the two for me as well.

“Amidst the attention given to the sciences as how they can lead to the cure of all diseases and daily problems of mankind, I believe that the biggest breakthrough will be the realization that the arts, which are conventionally considered ‘useless,’ will be recognized as the whole reason why we ever try to live longer or live more prosperously.” -John Maeda
